Council Functions

 

What are the functions of the West Coast Regional Council?

 

Our mission is to work with the people of the West Coast to sustainably manage the environment for the social, cultural and economic well being of present and future generations.

 

Resource Consent Administration – Council regulates those activities which may harm our environment. Consents are monitored to ensure conditions are adhered to.

 

Pollution Control – the Council responds to pollution complaints throughout the region and to accidental spills that might affect our rivers, lakes or coastal environment.

 

Resource Monitoring – Council staff gather and analyse data on water quality, water quantity, groundwater and air quality.

 


 

 

Policy Development – Policies, plans, guidelines, strategies and rules are prepared to assist in the management of the West Coast's natural resources.

 

 

 

Land Transport –  Council administers the Total Mobility Scheme and maintains a register of passenger services for the Region. The Council also prepares a Regional Land Transport Strategy every 6 years and a Regional Land Transport Programme every 3 years.

 

 

Pest Plant Control - The Council facilitates the control of certain pest plants in order to minimise their effects.

 

 

 

Flood Management – the Council maintains flood banks and flood warning systems around the West Coast, to protect people and property.
