Up until the First of July 2008, Council has held a major contract with the Animal Health Board to manage the control of possums on the West Coast, with the aim of eliminating bovine tuberculosis. Now, the 'TB Free NZ' program will be managed directly by the Animal Health Board.
About the program:
Farmed cattle and deer herds are at risk of getting bovine Tb - primarily from possums, or from within the cattle and deer herds themselves.
The spread of this disease to farms could have serious implications for the regional economy, where dairying is one of the biggest employers and income earners. This is made worse by the fact that the West Coast has the highest rate of Tb infection in New Zealand.
