An alternative to landfills

Over time, the numerous small landfills across the Region will be progressively closed, and some sites converted into transfer stations, where as much material as possible will be diverted from the waste stream, and the remaining waste will be transported to a single in-district landfill.

It is foreseen that there will be difficult wastes for which no markets exist, at least for the next several years, which will need to be dumped. As time goes on, more and more of these materials will be diverted by reusing them, recycling them, composting them or otherwise putting them to some beneficial use.
