Senior Policy Planner – West Coast Regional Council​

Within our beautiful part of New Zealand the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment and safeguarding the regions life-supporting capacity of air, water, soil, coast and ecosystems. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to benefit from employment opportunities, the natural environment and an excellent work-life balance offered in this stunning part of the world.

Based in Greymouth and reporting to the Planning Team Leader, you will be part of a growing team of professional regional planners. As a senior employee within the organisation, you will participate in decision making processes with a focus on regional planning, as well as providing advice to Team Leaders, Managers, Councillors and community stakeholders, and providing support and mentoring to other staff as required.

To succeed in this role you will likely be experienced in the area of local authority planning including policy analysis and plan preparation. A relevant tertiary qualification is required, along with knowledge or experience in the field of resource management.

Of equal importance will be your excellent communication and relationship skills, being able to form key relationships at various levels, including key stake holders such as regional and district level organisations, industry groups, and community groups.

Summer Student

Working alongside our Resource Scientists and Hydrological Technicians you will  undertake  regular site visits to our lake, river and ocean monitoring sites as well as carrying out office based data management.

Ideal applicants will:

  • be able to demonstrate an interest in natural sciences
  • ​have some science training at a tertiary level
  • have a full driver's license
  • have strong social and team skills

Hydrology Technician

Working alongside our Resource Scientists and Hydrological Technicians you will have the opportunity to experience the spectacular surroundings of the West Coast Region whilst undertaking regular site visits to our monitoring sites.

To succeed in this position you are likely to be right at home working in and around rivers with loggers and sensors, and in the office working with databases, data entry, and quality coding and hydrology software.

These skills will be paired with your excellent communication and planning skills and a willingness to learn about technical hydrology.  An eye for detail and a can do attitude are essential, along with a great sense of humour.

Consents & Compliance Monitoring Officer

We require a highly skilled communicator to join our small compliance monitoring and consenting team. This is an exciting, varied role where you will work with a wide range of people across a number of industries to ensure compliance with resource consent conditions and permitted activity rules.  You will be required to utilise your excellent communication and negotiation skills to provide sound advice, clear guidance and to resolve complex situations.

The role will entail:

  • Monitoring of a portfolio resource consents
  • Providing a timely and accurate response to complaints and incidents and sound advice on how to achieve compliance
  • Undertaking remediation and enforcement action
  • Occasional processing of resource consents
  • Active participation in the Consents and Compliance team working towards continuous improvement

This is a multi-skilled position, with a lot of interaction and is part of working towards sensible, positive and proactive outcomes for the West Coast. 

As a highly motivated team member you also have a proven ability to work under pressure.

You are a natural problem solver who has a professional approach to mediating, negotiating and resolving sometimes difficult situations

With an understanding of the dairy and /or mining industries you could be the person we are looking for.

Summer Planning Student

Working alongside our Planning staff you will have the opportunity to assist with progressing our RMA planning and policy documents through the statutory process.

Suitable candidates will have:

  • A good understanding of the Resource Management Act First Schedule plan development process;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Studying towards, or obtained,  a tertiary level qualification in resource management or planning;
  • Very good teamwork skills.
