Planning Team Leader – West Coast Regional Council

Within our vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment and safeguarding the regions life-supporting capacity of air, water, soil, and ecosystems. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to benefit from employment opportunities, the natural environment and an excellent work-life balance offered in this stunning part of New Zealand.

Based in Greymouth and reporting to the Planning Science and Innovation Manager, you will lead a growing team of professional regional planners, providing support and mentoring as required.

As a leader within the organisation, you will participate in decision making processes with a focus on regional planning, as well as provide advice to Managers, Councillors and community stakeholders.

To succeed in this role you will likely be highly experienced in the area of local authority planning including policy analysis and plan preparation with part of that experience in the field of resource management.

A relevant tertiary qualification is required, along with experience leading high performing teams, and a vision to drive innovative solution and shared services.

Of equal importance will be your excellent communication and relationship skills, being able to form key relationships at various levels, including, national government, regional and district level organisations and various community groups.

Natural Hazards Analyst

Emergency Management on the West Coast has undergone significant change. All four West Coast Councils have collaborated to produce one joint organisation, with a Regional Director based at West Coast Regional Council, and three Emergency Management Officers (EMOs) based at Buller, Grey and Westland District Councils, this role is the last piece of the puzzle.

With a tertiary qualification in resource planning, environmental science, earth science or engineering you will have the opportunity to use these skills whilst working amongst some of New Zealands most spectacular environments.

As a highly motivated team member your organisation and planning skills will be paired with your excellent communication skills which will be put to the test daily as you engage with the community, stakeholders across local government and the science and research sector.

You will build and maintain a strong evidence-based focus and translate research into policy and practice advice.  This role will lead and guide portfolios with a strong research focus to support risk management, resilience and recovery frameworks whilst advocating for hazard risk management practices.
