Untamed Natural Wilderness wins LGNZ EXCELLENCE Award

The West Coast Regional Council picked up the award for Best Practice contribution to Local Economic Development at the LGNZ EXCELLENCE Awards as a result of the unprecedented success of the Untamed Natural Wilderness brand.

Judges said that the brand is a brilliant initiative which has generated immediate results.

West Coast tourism expenditure is up by 13.1 percent ($61 million), compared to 9.1 percent for the South Island, and bed nights have increased by 85,170 between February 2016 and February 2017.

The 0.4 percent increase in tourism market share, from 5.1 to 5.5 percent, reversed six years of losses in less than a year.

Andrew Robb, Chairman of the West Coast Regional Council and the Governance Group overseeing the Regional Growth Programme, said it was great to have the brand work undertaken recognised in this manner.

“Untamed Natural Wilderness is a brand that truly reflects what our region has to offer,” said Mr Robb. “I am extremely proud of what Kevin Stratful, our economic development manager, and the team at Tourism West Coast, have achieved.”
