Westport Flood Protection
Feedback received from the Westport community on potential flood protection options is now available. With just over 200 responses received there is a vast amount of information for Council to consider from here.
Over the coming months Council will:
- Review the feedback received
- Access Envirolink funding to investigate other options presented by the community
- Reconvene the Buller Flood Working Group to refine the options based on the feedback received
- Identify community leaders with recognised and valuable knowledge who may wish to contribute, inviting them to provide further input.
Later this year, Council will be presenting refined options for consideration by the community. We will keep the community updated as we move forward with this process.

Westport Flood Protection Submission Summary (Web)
(PDF, 439.6KB)
Background
The Buller
River has the largest flood flow of any river in New Zealand yet Westport has
very limited flood protection. Ratepayers in the wider Westport area received
copies of ‘Our river, our town, our future protection’ which set out six
options for flood protection to consider. Feedback on the flood protection
options closed Friday 17 February 2017.
Information
on the options is available from this link
A full copy of the report outlining the various options prepared by Land River Sea Consulting is also available to
