This enables the Council to sustainably manage activities in the coastal marine area of the region.
The Regional Coastal Plan for the West Coast identifies issues associated with the use, development and protection of the coastal marine area, and has objectives, policies, rules and other methods of implementation in order to address those issues.
The coastal marine area is the area below the mean high water spring mark out to the 12 nautical mile limit at sea.
Common activities that occur in the West Coast coastal marine area include erosion protection works and stone removal.

Amendment to Remove Restricted Coastal Activities
The new New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010 (NZCPS) no longer requires regional coastal plans to have Restricted Coastal Activity rules. The NZCPS further directs regional councils to amend regional coastal plans as soon as practicable without using the public submission process under the Resource Management Act 1991. The Amendment which removes Restricted Coastal Activity provisions from the Regional Coastal Plan for the West Coast will become operative from 14 January 2011.
