Monitoring site comments
The State Highway 6 water level and rainfall recorder is situated on the Waiho River in the mid Waiho catchment, adjacent to the township of Franz Josef, and 19km upstream of the river mouth. The site has a catchment area of 185km2. Water levels are influenced by the Franz Josef glacier and associated snow fields and can fluctuate markedly throughout the year. Normal water levels are around 5.5 metres. A high flood water level of 7.2 metres was recorded in December 2001.
This site records a mean annual rainfall of approximately 5500mm and daily falls of up to 400mm.
This site is operated by the National Institute of Water & Atmosphere for Transit NZ and as a part of the West Coast Regional Council Flood Warning Network.
