The Woolfs water level recorder is situated on the Buller River in the lower Buller catchment, 3km upstream of where the Inangahua River flows into the Buller River at Inangahua Junction. The site has a catchment area of 4560km2. Summer water levels at this site can get as low as 0.8 metres but normal water levels are closer to 1.2 metres. A high flood water level of 8.4 metres was recorded at this site in May 1988.
This site is a part of the West Coast Regional Council Flood Warning Network.
