Monitoring site comments
The Waipuna water level and rainfall recorder is situated on the Grey River in the middle Grey catchment, 55km upstream of the township of Greymouth. The site has a catchment area of 642km2. Summer water levels at this site can get as low as 1.2 metres but normal water levels are closer to 1.6 metres. A high flood water level of 6.8 metres was recorded at this site in January 1977.
This site records a mean annual rainfall of 2000mm and daily falls of up to 120mm.
This site is operated by the National Institute of Water & Atmosphere, as part of the National Hydrometric Monitoring Network, and the West Coast Regional Council as part of the Regional Council Flood Warning Network.
