Westport 2100 Working Group
Community members have been now been found for six of the positions on the Westport 2100 Working Group.
“We were heartened by the interest in the Working Group,” said Neal Clementson, West Coast Regional Council Deputy Chairman.
Mr Clementson said that 16 applications had been received to fill the community representation by the close-off date of 14 December 2018.
“While this may not seem like many, given how busy everyone is these days, this was a good result and I would like to note that there was a very high calibre of applicants too.”
The Working Group will be officially ratified at the next meeting of the Buller District Council on 27 February 2019 with their first meeting to be held in early March.
The purpose of the working group is to engage with the Westport community and work together, with the Councils, to identify a pathway forward for the town for the benefit of future generations. It will consider how to manage natural hazards and what the town needs to do as it looks towards the future. This project has a long term focus and will result in recommendations to both the Buller District Council and West Coast Regional Council for future work programmes for civil defence, hydrology and operations.
“There are important discussions to be had, and decisions to be made, around the future of Westport,” said Sharon Roche, Buller District Councillor.
Ms Roche noted that these discussions will need input from the wider Westport Community.
“Yes we have the Working Group, but key to their work, and the eventual outcomes, will be the feedback and interaction with businesses, homeowners and other residents throughout this process.”
