Economic opportunities back in the spotlight
Economic opportunities back in the spotlight
Today’s funding announcements under the newly launched Provincial Growth Fund are being hailed on the West Coast.
West Coast Regional Council Chairman, Andrew Robb, welcomed news of the fund.
“We have been working hard over the past few years on not only identifying new opportunities but also implementing these within the region,” said Mr Robb.
Mr Robb, who also chairs the West Coast Regional Growth Governance Group, believes one of the significant benefits of the funding announced today, is the support for the West Coast to diversify its economy.
“The Waste to Energy project is the first of its kind in New Zealand and it’s great to see the Government support such an initiative,” said Mr Robb. “It’s exciting that the West Coast will be at the forefront of new technology and innovative ideas.”
The West Coast is also currently experiencing a booming tourism season. This has put pressure on its key icons and attractions.
“New funding to complete two of our key cycle attractions, the West Coast Wilderness Trail and the Old Ghost Road, is heartening,” said Mr Robb. “We need to relieve the pressure on Punakaiki and the master planning process will ensure we are heading in the right direction with this piece of work.”
Mr Robb said he was looking forward to working with the new Government, and in particular with Hon. Shane Jones, Minister for Regional Economic Development, and Hon. David Parker, Minister for Economic Development, on matters that will assist the West Coast to grow and diversify its economy.
“The provinces of New Zealand are where the opportunities lie,” said Mr Robb, “and the West Coast is full of potential.”
